Severity is not always obvious
Dental symptoms can have many causes, and severity is not always obvious from pain alone. Call the office for guidance if you experience an urgent concern.
- Persistent or severe tooth pain.
- Facial or gum swelling.
- A broken, cracked or knocked-out tooth.
- A lost crown, filling or other restoration.
- Dental trauma or uncontrolled oral bleeding.
- Pain when biting, sudden sensitivity or signs of infection.
What the visit is designed to accomplish
The immediate priorities are to identify the likely source of the problem, address urgent risk, relieve symptoms when possible and explain whether definitive treatment can begin that day or should be scheduled or coordinated. The appropriate response depends on the examination and diagnosis.
When to seek medical emergency care
Call 911 or go to an emergency department for trouble breathing or swallowing, severe or rapidly spreading facial swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, major facial trauma or another potentially life-threatening condition. A dental office is not a substitute for emergency medical care.
